It is produced by the German pharmaceutical company Merz Pharma and is like other botulinum toxin products such as Botox and Dysport. However, unlike Botox and Dysport, Xeomin is a “naked” neurotoxin that does not contain any complexing proteins. This makes Xeomin a pure form of botulinum toxin, which may reduce the risk of antibody formation and resistance. The active ingredient in Xeomin is botulinum toxin type A, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The toxin works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is responsible for muscle contractions. This leads to muscle relaxation and a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Mechanism of Xeomin works by binding to the presynaptic nerve terminal and preventing the release of acetylcholine. This leads to a reduction in muscle activity and a decrease in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Xeomin has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of cervical dystonia, blepharospasm, and glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows). It is also used off-label for the treatment of other medical conditions such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and chronic migraine.
